Is Limiar a hotel or a retreat center?

Neither, really. Limiar is a small, nature-based space in central Portugal with room for a handful of guests at a time. It hosts short stays and a few small retreats through the year. There's no reception, no set program for short stays, and no hotel-style service — it's closer to staying at a quiet quinta than to a resort.

What does "off-grid" mean in practice?

There is electricity and running water, but both are produced on-site rather than connected to public networks, so it is semi off-grid rather than extreme. In practice it means limited mobile signal in parts of the land, simple spaces, a slower rhythm, and no shops, restaurants or nightlife nearby. You come here to settle in, not to be entertained.

Do I need a car to stay at Limiar?

A car is strongly recommended. The nearest towns are about 30–45 minutes away and the surrounding area is best reached at your own pace. If you arrive without one, we can help with a taxi from Fundão for arrival and departure, but daily trips out become difficult.

How do I book a stay or a retreat?

Write to us directly on WhatsApp or through the contact form. Short stays are arranged around your own dates; retreats run on specific dates published on the site. We'll check availability, talk through which accommodation suits you, and walk you through the next steps. A deposit confirms the booking; everything is arranged personally.

Can I come for a short stay without joining a retreat?

Yes. Short stays are flexible and self-guided — a few days to a couple of weeks, around your own dates. There's no program. Retreats are separate and happen on specific dates. Just get in touch and we'll see what works.

What kind of accommodation is there?

Bell tents with double beds, a more secluded twin tent, an ensuite tiny house, and two rooms in the main house (one ensuite). All spaces are simple and comfortable, close to the land and the surrounding trees.

Are meals included?

Accepted Answer

During retreats, yes — simple, seasonal, mostly vegetarian meals shared together. For short stays, meals aren't automatic; we can talk through options when you get in touch. There is a kitchen you're welcome to use.

Are yoga, massage or sound sessions available outside of retreats?

Accepted Answer

On request, depending on who is around. Yoga, pilates, massage and bodywork, or sound sessions can sometimes be arranged during a short stay. Availability varies, so it's best to ask in advance.

Do I need any experience with meditation or sound during a retreat?

Accepted Answer

No. Sessions are gentle, optional, and open to everyone. There is no expectation to perform, share, or participate in anything you are not drawn to.

What should I bring?

Accepted Answer

Comfortable clothing, sturdy shoes for walking on the land, and anything personal you want to have with you. We provide bedding, towels, yoga mats, and blankets. A journal is often nice to have during retreats.

How do I get to Limiar?

Fly into Lisbon (about 2 hours by car) or Porto (about 3 hours). Bus (Rede Expressos) and train (Comboios de Portugal) both reach Fundão; from there we can help arrange a taxi. Some guests prefer to fly into Madrid or Seville and drive across the countryside.

What is the cancellation policy?

Deposits are non-refundable. Because the space is small, a cancelled booking is hard to fill on short notice. We recommend travel insurance that covers cancellations.
